Past Tense Continuous

După cum spuneam aici timpurile gramaticale continue se formează cu ajutorul verbului "a fi" şi arată o tranziţie, o schimbare.

Past Tense Continuous, numit în unele gramatici şi "progressive" se formează după următoarele reguli:
Afirmativ: S + to be (formele was/were) + V-ing
Negativ: S + to be not (was not/were not) + V-ing
Interogativ: to be (was/were) + S + V-ing
ex:: Bill was walking in the park this time yesterday.
John and Mary were not listening to music when Bill entered the room.
Were you asking for more money?

Utilizare:
- acţiuni aflate în desfăşurare într-o perioadă din trecut
ex.: It was him who was running in the park this time last Monday.
- acţiuni de scurtă durată care se desfăşurau în trecut
ex.: She was just passing by when the police spotted the pickpocket.
- acţiuni care se desfăşurau simultan în trecut
ex.: While we were working in the garden, Jim was not doing his homework.

Acest timp este, în linii mari, echivalentul imperfectului din română, cu diferenţa că poate fi tradus şi prin trecut.
